Castle Rock Lake and Petenwell Lake, located in central Wisconsin, are Wisconsin's 4th and 2nd largest lakes respectively. The lakes were built approximately 30 years ago by the Wisconsin River Power Company by constructing dams along the Wisconsin River. Castle Rock Lake has a surface area of over 16,000 acres and more than 75 miles of shoreline, while Petenwell Lake's 95 miles of shoreline surround it's 23,000 acres. The land that remained above water between the two rivers became known locally as the Buckhorn peninsula. A little more than 4,500 acres at the tip of the peninsula and along the Yellow River were purchased by the state and became Buckhorn State Park and Wildlife Area. Natural areas abound, with the popular Necedah National Wildlife Refuge a short drive north.
The lakes are called “Wisconsin’s best kept secret”, as many people aren’t aware of them. That’s been changing recently, and the area is becoming more and more popular for its great outdoor sports opportunities including boating, swimming, hiking, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. The sloughs and backwaters of the flowage offer lots of opportunities to canoeists. The area is conveniently located just a 3-1/2 hour drive from Chicago and Minneapolis, a 2 hour drive from Milwaukee, and a little over an hour from Madison. Castle Rock Lake is just a 10 minute drive from the Mauston exit off Interstate 90/94.
Several upscale communities have been built along the shores of Castle Rock Lake. O'Dell's Bay offers affordable and luxurious townhouses and single family homes and home sites. With more than 4000 feet of sandy beaches on uncrowded Castle Rock Lake this resort-like waterfront community offers an elegant clubhouse, swimming pool, and tennis courts. Challenging golf courses and interesting restaurants are nearby. A family-oriented lakeside pub and restaurant, The Dirty Turtle, offers sandwiches, drinks and boat docking and rental facilities.
Half Moon Bay also located on Castle Rock Lake offers distinctive town homes, beautiful single family homes, and home sites on 185 acres of woods and water providing scenic and recreation pleasure. Residents enjoy a private clubhouse, swimming pool, tennis courts, and hiking on Castle Rock's beaches. An added bonus is the one mile of continuous sandy shoreline around the tranquil 13-acre Legend Lake, a man-made, crystal clear lake stocked with game fish and perfect for swimming and pedal boating.
